A city accessible to all

None

In 2013 the City of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve was granted the European EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) label in 2013 on the theme of “Tourism and accessibility” thanks to its many assets and initiatives concerning accessibility.

From the start, the city was designed with the idea of making it accessible to all, taking into account the needs of all its visitors, whatever their age or level of mobility. The train stop is in the very centre of the city, which is also easily reachable by bus, car, bicycle but also on foot.
Each stairway also has a ramp or a lift to enable persons with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs, elderly people, bicycles, scooters, etc., to negotiate them with ease. For the visually impaired, tactile slabs have also been placed on pavements or paths in pedestrian squares or facilities.

And not forgetting, of course, the museums and the Forest of Dreams (Bois des Rêves) which are accessible to the general public, as much to children and the elderly as to persons with reduced mobility and the visually impaired.

What is EDEN ?

Since 2007, the Government Tourism Advisory Service has been participating in the European EDEN - European Destinations of Excellence competition on Belgium’s behalf.

The aim of the competition is to promote destinations which have distinguished themselves through their good practices in terms of sustainable development, integrated management, quality, innovation and promotion according to a particular theme chosen annually by the European Union.
